What Is Surgical / Medical Grade Stainless Steel?

Both are corrosion-resistant alloys of iron, chromium and carbon, but they behave very differently once heat-treated, which is why manufacturers pick one over the other depending on what the instrument needs to do.

Instruments that are autoclaved hundreds of times over their working life need a surface finish and steel composition that resists pitting and staining — a pitted surface isn’t just cosmetic, it becomes a place for bacteria to hide even after proper sterilization.
