Surgical forceps aren’t one instrument, they’re a whole family of tools built for different jobs: grasping tissue, clamping vessels, holding needles, moving sponges. If you’re sourcing for a hospital or building out a distributor catalog, knowing which forceps type does what saves you from ordering the wrong one. Here’s a rundown of the surgical forceps types ASONS SURGICAL manufactures, with what each one is actually used for.
Allis forceps, for grasping tissue
Allis forceps have interlocking teeth built to hold heavy tissue without tearing it, which is why they show up so often in general surgery and gynecology. See our Allis Tissue Forceps.
Artery forceps, for clamping vessels
Also called hemostatic forceps, these clamp blood vessels to control bleeding during a procedure. We manufacture both the curved and straight versions, the curved jaw usually goes deeper into tissue while the straight jaw works better on surface vessels.
Babcock forceps, for atraumatic holding
Babcock forceps have a wide, fenestrated jaw designed to hold delicate structures like bowel or fallopian tube without crushing them. See our Babcock Forceps.
Kelly and Kocher forceps, for clamping and dissection
Kelly forceps are a general-purpose clamp used across most surgical specialties. Kocher forceps look similar but add teeth at the tip for a firmer grip on tougher tissue. See our Kelly Forceps and Kocher Forceps.
Mosquito forceps, for fine vessel work
Smaller and finer than a standard artery forceps, mosquito forceps are used on small vessels where a bulkier clamp would get in the way. See our Mosquito Forceps.
Needle holder forceps
Not technically for grasping tissue at all, these hold a suturing needle steady so the surgeon can control it through each stitch. See our Needle Holder Forceps.
Sponge and towel clamp forceps
Sponge forceps move gauze and dressings in and out of the surgical field without hands touching the sterile field directly. Towel clamp forceps do a different job entirely, holding surgical drapes in place. See our Sponge Forceps and Backhaus Towel Clamp Forceps.
