Surgical scissors look similar from a distance, but the differences in blade shape and tip actually matter a lot once you’re in a procedure. Using the wrong pair on delicate tissue can cause damage a purpose-built one would have avoided. Here’s what separates the main surgical scissors types we manufacture, and when each one gets used.
Mayo scissors, curved and straight
Mayo scissors are heavier and sturdier than most surgical scissors, built for cutting tougher tissue and sutures rather than delicate dissection. The curved blade gets into tighter spaces, the straight blade is better for a clean, direct cut. See our Mayo Scissors Curved and Mayo Scissors Straight.
Metzenbaum scissors, for delicate dissection
Longer, thinner and lighter than Mayo scissors, Metzenbaum scissors are built for cutting and dissecting delicate tissue where precision matters more than cutting force. See our Metzenbaum Scissors.
Micro scissors, for fine, small-scale work
Smaller still, with a fine tip built for micro-surgical work and procedures where even a Metzenbaum blade would be too large. See our Micro Scissors.
Bandage scissors, for dressings and materials
Not used on tissue at all. Bandage scissors have a blunt, angled tip designed to cut through dressings and bandages close to the skin without the risk of a sharp point. See our Bandage Scissors.
